BREAK IN TIME SERIES
Accommodation takings The trend estimate of the total accommodation takings for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined was $1.3 million in the June quarter 2003. The trend estimate, adjusted for the break in series, rose 0.1% in June quarter 2003 compared with March quarter 2003. The seasonally adjusted estimate of the total accommodation takings was $1.3 million. When adjusted for the break in series, the seasonally adjusted estimate fell by 1.4% in June quarter 2003. Room occupancy rate The room occupancy rate, being derived from number of rooms and number of nights occupied, is not subject to a break in series. This is explained in the Appendix. The trend estimate of the room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined fell 0.4 percentage points from 58.9% in March quarter 2003 to 58.5% in June quarter 2003. The trend estimate also fell in March quarter 2003, following four consecutive quarters of growth. The seasonally adjusted estimate of the room occupancy rate fell by 1.1 percentage points in June quarter 2003 and by 1.3 percentage points in March quarter 2003. Accommodation takings In June quarter 2003, accommodation takings for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined were $1,159.5 million. Hotels contributed $553.8 million (47.8%) to accommodation takings. Takings per room night occupied in the June quarter 2003 were highest for hotels at $134.80. Accommodation takings contributions in the June quarter 2003 for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined were highest in New South Wales (32.9%) and Queensland (27.0%) and lowest in the Australian Capital Territory (2.8%). Takings from accommodation showed a decrease of 9.4% ($120.3 million) from March quarter 2003 to June quarter 2003 when adjusted for the break in series. Room nights occupied Total room nights occupied were 10.2 million in June quarter 2003 for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined. Of this, hotels contributed 4.1 million (40.4%) while motels and guest houses contributed 4.0 million (38.8%). Serviced apartments had the lowest room nights occupied at 2.1 million (20.8%) room nights. Room nights occupied showed a decrease of 5.7% (0.6 million) from March quarter 2003 to June quarter 2003 when adjusted for the break in series. Room occupancy rate The room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined was 55.3% in June quarter 2003 compared with 59.1% in March quarter 2003. This was a decrease of 3.8 percentage points. Hotels recorded the largest decrease in the room occupancy rate at 6.2 percentage points. Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory were the only states/territories to record increases in room occupancy rates. NOTES INTRODUCTION This publication presents results from the quarterly Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA). The scope of the regular, annual STA includes hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments. For the four quarters of 2003 the scope of the STA has been expanded to include holiday flats, units and houses, caravan parks and visitor hostels. See Explanatory Notes for more detail. HOTELS, MOTELS AND SERVICED APARTMENTS Data quality improvements The ABS has identified 132 hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments which have been operating for a number of quarters but were not on the STA frame. These additional establishments have been included in the STA from the June quarter 2003. Break in time series The addition of the 132 tourism establishments has resulted in a break in time series between the March and June quarters 2003. The impact of the break in time series is explained in the Appendix. Particular care needs to be taken when calculating percentage changes between the June quarter 2003 and previous quarters. HOLIDAY FLATS, UNITS AND HOUSES, CARAVAN PARKS AND VISITOR HOSTELS Previously published data for the March quarter 2003 for holiday flats, units and houses, caravan parks and visitor hostels have been revised. These data are available free of charge on the ABS web site. The ABS has collected data for holiday flats, units and houses, caravan parks and visitor hostels for the June and September quarters 2003. These data will be released along with September and December quarters 2003 after December 2003 data has been collected and processed.
